Mental Health Awareness Project
After a very hard year, the students of the choral department wanted to do more for our community by learning about mental health organizations and spread awareness by performing a set of music that encapsulates that message.
If you would like to watch the performance in its entirety, the best order to watch them in is:
1) Truth performed by Bella Voce
2) Please Stay performed by Chamber Choir featuring PEER
3) You Will Be Found performed by Champe Singers
Below you will be able to find the videos of the performance, non-profit organization research projects, as well as reflections that a few students wanted the community to read. Each class had the opportunity to present their slide on the non-profit organization they researched. On behalf of the students in these three classes, the JCHS Choral Department will be making one $100 donation per class to the non-profit organization of their choice.

Our Why:
In 2019, suicide took the lives of 47,511 people in the USA alone. Depression affects about 20 million people in the USA, 350 million worldwide. Mental health disorders are serious issues in our culture and it is important that we have open conversation about their existence and that we show support to those who are battling them.

Student Reflections:
Student 1:
I never really talked about mental health with other people because I just assumed I was being dramatic, but after going through 'Please Stay' and now all of these organizations; I realize mental health is a big deal and I'm allowed to be upset without being overly dramatic.
Student 2:
Learning this song was such a great process for me. I loved the lyrics of the song and the meaning behind it. Some may say that the song is sad because of the heavy topic, but I personally saw the song in a positive light and thought it was very uplifting and encouraging. I love that we are able to make an impact on the community as there has never been such an opportunity throughout all of high school (for me, at least).
Student 3:
It was difficult to learn and sing the song on days that I was struggling. On days that I was not struggling, it was helpful to hear the positive message in the song, and to remember the lyrics and the message on my bad days.
Student 4:
This felt really uplifting, and it helped me see just how important it is to feel and add emotion when singing because every song has a story behind it. Sometimes, the song explicitly shows us the story, but it sometimes is created by ourselves as we work through it.
Student 5:
Singing about these topics have helped me bring personal awareness to mental health month. However, researching organizations and having conversations has helped me feel like I can make an impact in our community with the people I love while doing something I love
Student 6:
This was a very informative period during choir. Everyone was very serious throughout the process and genuinely cares, which makes me happy since that highlights how our choir community is inclusive to anybody.
Student 7:
I am glad that we chose to do this song and are trying to bring the message of mental awareness to others. Especially during this time where people are so isolated, I think our song would bring people some happiness and hope.
Student 8:
It was cool to learn about it. I don't usually talk about this stuff in my daily life so it's nice to learn about something and help people even just a little.
Student 9:
I'm really glad we did this because now we're not only spreading awareness within our school w/ peer, but we also get to donate. Donating is by far the most exciting part to me. I think it's important to help others in need get the resources and treatment they deserve. Like at the end of the day a little donation could end up saving someone's life. I also liked talking about all these different organizations because I get to see how big the mental health awareness community is.
Student 10:
I think that learning this song and really being able to really be able to express our strength and hope through this song, I think that this really has been an eye opening experience, and that we can all learn something
Student 11:
It made me respect the fragility of life around me so much more. life is truly lived second by second, and we should appreciate every single one. perfection is not possible, if it did exist there would be no beauty in things like the moon or rain or sun. Hope is real, help is real, we are not alone.
Student 12:
It is a beautiful song. You made it a lot easier by doing polls and checking up on us. I loved the message and lyrics a lot and I think we all handled it really well.
